They are alleged to have been originated by Maoris and tramps for gum« digging purpose?. Some settlers' houses have been burnt down. The damage is estitnatedjat £20,000. A valuable Government bush is destroyed. 9 The Union Sash and Door Company, Brown and Campbell, and others are heavy losers. By one of these fireß a daughter of Vincent Tolkof lost hor life. i . ..
