Auckland Supreme COURT.
JUDGE GILLISS ON THE HAMILTON MURDER CASE. (UNITED PRBvSS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, Jan. 12. TLe quarterly meeting of the Supreme Court ODened to«day. Judge Gillies, m his charge to the Grand Jury, stated thpre were 37 prisoners charged with 29 (?) offences. He remarked on the increase of crime m the district, which he found difficult to account for. It was a singular facb that when one or two crimes of a particular character happened m the district, others followed. He had no doubt that the sensational accounts m the newspapers had something to do with it. Such reports had a pornicious effect on young persons, and those ot emotional temperament. Referring to the Hamilton murder case, he said that while the investigating Magistrate did ripht m committing pri--1 soners on the evidence, the Grand Jury would have to be satisfied that the evidence was sufficient to warrant them believing the prisoners guilty before finding a true bill. They could take no cognizance of any intention to produce further evidence however s Q rious the case, or strong the suspicion of guilt.
