SERIOUS ILLNESS OF MR GLADSTONE. GAMBETTA'S FUNERAL CEREMONIES. OPPOSITION TO NEW ZEALAND LOAN. (BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH. — COPYRIGHT.) (UNITED PBESB ASSOCIATION.) London, Jan. 8. Two hundred thousand persons viewed the body of. M. Gambetta while lying ,m state m the Palais Bourbon. The tuneral can be compared favorably with the ceremony ou the occasion of the transfer ot the ashes of Neapoleonj All trade was suspended, and the 1 Statue was draped with black. Twenty-«four jegimentss of the liae kept the route of the lujueral procession, and three cars, loaded with , reaths of immortelles, received from the remotest pares of France, preceded the bearsa, which was followed by the mem . bers of the Ministry, of Parliament, by hundreds of deputations from public bodies throughout the country, the carriages ot the Ambassadors of Foreign Powers, and upwards of 50,000 mourners. There were enormous crowds ot onlookers, and the cemetery was not reached uutil five' hours after the pro* cession started. At the cemetery M. Brisson addressed those assembled, and urged the necessity of union m order to achieve Gainbatta's aspiratious.
The Statist advises the Australian Banks to terminate the war rate. The Pall Mall Gazette suggests that investors should teach Victoria and New Zealand that their loan minim urns are too high by not applying for debentures. The Commissioner of Police at' Dublin has resigned. It is reported that Mr Gladstone is seriously indisposed. Dr Clarke, the Premier's medical adviser, has been summoned to Ha warden. The Right Hon. Dr. Lyon Playfair, has resigned his office as Chairman of Committees m the House of Commons* ' Madras, Jan. 6. The Spanish Ministry has resigned, a split m the Cabinet having occurred upon the question of finance. Paris, Jan. 6. It is announced that the remains of the late General Chanzy will be accorded a public funeral at the expense of the State.
