A Serious Charge.
(BY TELEGRAPH.) (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Thames, Jan. 7. At the Resident's Court this morning a charge of attempted rape upon Mrs Ehrenfried, laid against W. W. Gud geon, lately local agent for the N«w Zealand Herald, wa3 disposed of. Mrs Ehrenfried's evidence, although she wa3 subjected to severe cross-examina-tion by counsel, was very clear and distinct against the accused. Mr Bhrenfried, and his manager Mr Styak, proved to finding Gardiner m the act of holding Mrs Ehrenfriel down m the endeavour to assault her. Mrs Ehrenfried utterly d -nies giving Gudgeon any encouragement m hia conduct. Her screams brought her husband and Mr Styak to her assistance. Gudgeon is a married man, and himself and his wife were on intimate visiting 1 terms at Mr Ehrenfried's house, where the oifencc is stated to have been committed. Mr Cooper, who appeared for Gudgeon, reserved all defence for the Supreme Court sitting, to which the accused hag been committed. Bail was allowed at £300 personal, and two sureties ot£lso each.
