(by telegraph.) (united press association.) Auckland, January 3. H. J. Smith, for many years traveller for Archibald Clark and Sons, war&housemen, poisoned himself at his residence, North. Shore, yesterday. He had been at the races with his wife and seemed m good health. After his return he want into his own room, and his wife going m a short time afterwards found him lying with two empty bottles of chloral. A doctor was sent for, who applied che stomach pump, but unavailing, the patient dying soon afterwards, [t is not known whether it is a case of suicide or whether he had taken an overdose of the drug. No cause is known for the suicide. Later. At the inquest a ver<\ ict of death from natural causes was returned. The postmortem examination showed extensive disease of the heart.
