New Year's Day.

The fi.st day o f January 1883, was ushered m upon the good people of Palnierston by the Brass Band playing through the streets the old and wellknown " Auld Lang Syne." The morning broke most beautifully clear, and from an eatly hour people com* mecced preparation for holiday- making. The- Ilangitikei races attracted a good number of people, whilst the Friendly Societies Fete secured a greater number. At 10.30 a.m. the different Societies met at the Foresters Hall, where a great number of on-lookere assembled, aad the precession headed by the band started for the Sports' ground. The procession itself numbered about 300. THE SPORTS. Maiden Race. — 100 yds, entries 2s. Ist prize 27s ; 2nd 10?. In this race there were seven entries, but it was easily won by W. Bush, Collopy 2ud, and I. J. Salmon 3rd. Vaulting with Pole.— First prize LI ; 2nd 10s. Three entries; The contest laid between Hughes and Laing, who made some iemarkably good jumping. The competitor divided mdney at, the finish, when at a jump of 9ft 6 inches. Friendly Societies' Handicap. — Inj two events. 220 yds ; 440 yds ; to be run m regalia. Nominations 3s ; acceptance 2s. Ist prize, &4 •'; 2nd prize, £1. lfs ; 3rd prize, 10a. Five entries. W. JjL. Bennett 4 yards and 8 yards ; W. E. Bush, 6 yards and 10 yards j H. Shcerin, scratch, I. j. Salmon, 6 yards and 10 yards. Bush did not start; Salmon got away with a lead which he managed to maintain, to the finish, , Bennett. 2nd, Sheerin, 3rd. In this race fiye entered, but only three started, but from the beginning' Belfit and Knight ran away from Cook, wbo fell out at' the sixth round. In the second mile of this race, was exhibited perhaps some oi the finest walking ever seen m this district. The men fought very hard for first place, but at the finish Knight was winded, and, failed to put on a spurt when needed, thus giving Belfit the race, Knight\2rid. Hop Step and Jump.— Five entries. Hughes, Ist ; Collopy, 2nd; Sutcliffe, Brd. Baby Show. — For this interesting event there was a great number of competitors, Mr J. C. Fowler was appointed to the happy position of Judee, and elid his'^best to please. Mrs F. Collins baby, 6 months of age, was considered the finest, but by "some means, Mrs P. Kavcnagh's baby was-awarded the prize, Mrs Collins 2nd. A number of other took place, but they were not of special interest.. . During the day the merry-go-round, swinging boat, and dancing platform were all kept busily, engaged. There nvist have been fully 2000 persons on the ground, and all appeared to enjoy themselves, well. .-The,- day's soort passed off without a single hitch m any way. Th.9 day was wound up by a Promenade Concert and Ball at which fully 60 couples of dangers attended. Songs, &c , insterspersed with dances and thus a tuost enjoyable evening was spent. We have not space to refer to theson^s or performers, individually, but suffice it to say that everyone went away well contented with the evening's amusement.
