ABSTRACT OF THE PENAL CLAUSES OF THE ACT FOR PREVENTING CORRUPT PRACTICES AT ELECTIONS.

Any one guilty of the following acts will be liable to fine and imprisonment, and a penalty of £IOO with costs of suit:— 1. Any person procuring or attempting to procure a vote by the gift, loan, offer or promise of money or other valuable consideration. 2. Any person who shall .offer or promise anyplace or employment to induce anyone to vote or refrain from voting; or shall give any place or employment on account of any elector having voted or refrained from voting. 3. Any person making any offer, loan, or promise, to any one, to induce him to procure the return of any person to serve in the General Assembly, or to procure the vote of any elector. 4. Any person who shall advance any money, to be expended in bribery, or in repayment of any money so expended. Any one guilty of the following acts will be liable to fine and imprisonment and a penalty of £lO with costs of suit: 1. Any person receiving, or agreeing to receive, any loan, office, employment, or valuable consideration, for voting or refraining to vote. 2. Any person, who, after any election, shall receive any such consideration, for having given, or refrained to give his vote, or for having induced any one to vote, or refrain from voting. Any candidate giving any meat, drink, or entertainment, to any person in order to be elected, or in consequence of his election, or to induce any one to vote, or refrain from voting, will be guilty of treating, and liable to a penalty of £SO ) and any one accepting any such entertainment will lose his vote. Any person using or threatening any violence, obstruction, or intimidation, to induce any one to vote, or refrain from voting, will be liable to fine, imprisonrnent, and a penalty of £SO with costs of suit. Any person convicted of any of the above offences, to be struck off the roll of electors. Any person who shall give, or cause to be given to on the day of polling, any meat, drink, or refreshment, to any elector on account of his having polled, or being about to poll, will be liable to a penalty of 40s. for each offence. Any candidate who shall give, or provide, to any person, any cockade, ribbon, or mark of distinction, to forfeit 40s. for each offence. Any person displaying any flag, or party emblem, or employing any band, or musical instruments, to forfeit 40s. for each offence. Every member of a Committee, or organised body, for promoting the return of any candidate, who shall attend any meeting of such Committee, or organised body at any public-house, or building thereto annexed, to forfeit £5 in every case.
