The Marlborough Press. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1860.
By the courtesy of a gentleman who arrived from Nelson on Thursday, we are in possession of a “ Nelson Examiner,” containing European and colonial intelligence, in anticipation of the inland mail. In order to make room for it, we reserve any remarks on subjects of general interest.
Thursday la‘st being the anniversary of the existence of the province of Marlborough, was observed as a holiday in the provincial offices, and very generally by tradesmen and others. After a winter of unusual severity, beautiful spring weather has materially improved the aspect of the country, and the cultivated lands promise abundant returns.
New Provinces Act. —The Examiner says:—As far as we can gather from the single paper before us, a bill to amend the New Provinces Act had been introduced into the House of Representatives. This was opposed by Ministers, and on the motion for reading the bill a second time, was met by an amendment proposed by Mr. Weld, that the bill be read that day six months. A long debate ensued, which resulted in the following division. For the amendment, 17; Messrs. Stafford, Fitzgerald, Heale, J. C. Richmond, Weld, Bell, Clark, King, Symonds, Kelling, Curtis, Haultain, Monro, Jollie, Richmond, Domett, Campbell; against 16; Messrs. Daldy, Brandon, Rhodes, Carter, Henderson, Williamson, Fitzherbert, Cookson, Graham, Ward, Moorhouse, Sewell, Forsaith, Fox, Brown, Gillies. Messrs. Farmer and Carleton paired off for the amendment with Messrs. Feathers ton and Renall.
