LOCAL NEWS.

Fire. —-We are sorry to have to report that the residence of Messrs. Wrey and Blundell, at Wantwood, caught fire on Wednesday week near midnight, and in twenty minutes was totally destroyed, with all it contained. The fire, we understand, was communicated by the rafters in a

chimney. Felony. Yesterday night, a box of soap, a cask of vinegar, and about two gallons of brandy, were stolen from a dray left out near the Marlborough Hotel. The cask of vinegar was no doubt taken for one of spirits, aud on the mistake being discovered, had been returned to the dray empty of its contents, whilst the soap and brandy bad been appropriated. It is a pity that in a quiet country town like Beaverton there should have been any temptation to the commitment of such a felony, and we would only warn any one attempting the like of the dangerous character of such a .game, in which"detection is more likely to be the final result than effectual concealment.

Photography - . —As will be seen by our advertising columns, Mr. Lane, the Photographist’s stay in Marlborough is shortly to ibe brought to a close, and we would therefore recommend those wishing portraits taken to lose no time in applying at the gallery in Beaverton. Mr. Lane is an expert manipulator, and has well earned the patronage that has already been bestowed upon him. We must say that the generality of portraits and views taken by this gentleman are very successful efforts in art, and show a clearness and precision often wanting in the pictures of photographists. The" Cresswell. —We hear it was intended that tho Cresswell should sail to■day. Wo would direct the attention of the license holders who may not have made returns of their stock on their runs, or paid assessment and license fees to the advertisement of the Commissioner of Crown Lands, requiring the same to be done forthwith.
