OTAGO.
We understand that some applications for large quantities of land within runs have been presented during the week, and have been very properly refused. Two or three years ago we were in urgent need of funds, and it might have been for the public interest to dispose of as much land as possible at 10s. per acre. Now we are in no such need, the value of land is greatly enhanced, and the sale of these lands would not only be detrimental, but ruinous to the public interest and unjust to individuals. Under such circumstances, the determination ' of the Waste Lands Board to refuse all such applications was a most judicious one, in which they will doubtless be sustained by the Superintendent, and, we should hope, by any new Executive.— Colonist.
