MARLBOROUGH RACES.
A subscription having been entered into by the inhabitants of the Province of Marlborough, for the purpose of celebrating the Separation from Nelson Province, by having races, a meeting was held at Mr. Pike's, Victoria Hotel, on Monday, January 2, 1860, F. L. Vickerman, Escp, in the
Mr. V. Hewitt proposed, and Mr. J. Macdonald seconded, “ That the races he held on the 18th January.” Mr. Robinson proposed, as an amendment, and Mr. J. Greig seconded, “ That the races he held on the 25th and 26th January.” Carried unanimously. Mr. V. Hewitt proposed, and Mr. Robinson seconded, “That the races be held on the Race Ground used by the late Wairau Jockey Club, which Mr. Bryden has offered the use of, free of expense.” Carried. Mr. Robinson proposed, and Mr. Simmonds seconded, “ That £5 he appropriated to pay Mr. Bryden for the use of the ground, and for permission to put up refreshment tents.” Carried. Mr. Robinson undertook to provide posts and put them on the course. The ropes arc to he provided by the late Wairau Jockey Club. Mr. Macdonald proposed, and Mr. Attwood seconded, “ That Mr. Vickerman act as Secretary and Treasurer.” Carried. Mr. Macdonald proposed, and Mr. Simmonds seconded the following gentlemen as a. Committee :—Messrs. Robinson, Hewitt, Minchin, Pike, Macdonald, Simmonds, Wratt, Attwood, and Coward. Mr. V. Hewitt proposed, and Mr. Macdonald seconded, “That the Committee meet in half an hour.” The committee met at the appointed time, and drew np the Race List which will he found in our advertising columns.
