SEDDON-TAYLOR LIBEL.

Some interesting references were made by Mr T. E, Taylor, in a speech in Christchurch last week, to the dif. Terence between himself and Captain Seddon. He said that he wished it to be understood that he hail no personal feeling in the matter. Some people assumed that he was simply trying to annoy the Premier, but that was altogether wrong. He regretted that he had to refer to a matter that might seem to arise from personal ill-feeling, but he had his duty to the colony, and the matter was one affecting a public service. The matter at issue was the appointment of a mere'lad, a nice enough boy, to the position of adviser to the Minister -of Defence. It was as if he had brought down his own eleven year old daughter and made her adviser to Messrs Taylor and Cole. The Audit Department had at first refused to pass the vouchers for the new officer’s salary of <£3oo or £4OO per year, but this difficulty had been got over and the appointment made, although many men who had lost health and strength in the South African war were asking in vain for a little assistance. He had nothing personal against the Premier, but he said emphatically that Mr Seddon had no right to prepare billets for members of his family whom he could well afford to keep.

Mr Justice Denniston last week remarked to a Dunedin jury that it was a favburite plan of many counsels to frighten a jury by impressing upon them the nature of the maximum penalty which their clients might be required to undergo. He had noticed that in such cases counsel always applied for the extension of the provisions of the First Offenderc’ Probation Act to their clients when a conviction had been recorded. “Dead.
