ROADS AND BRIDGES.
Mr Rutherford is a politician in advance of his time. his fellow members, during a; late* debate on the Counties Act Amendment Bill, that he was in favour of abolishing all grants to local bodies and institutions. “It is all right for us,” Mr Rutherford naively rematked, “we jbeing of the right colour we get what we want. But fertile poor people opposite !”—and here a wave of the speaker's hand conveyed a column of illustration. Mr Rutherford further opined that roads and bridges should be maintained by the colony instead of by loeal bodies. To him the unsatisfactory state of some roads provided a cogent reason.
