Iu order to meet the wishes of his nnmerous and rapidly increasing list of customers, Mr Frank Hargreaves, painter, paperhanger and house decorator, has decided to erect a shop on the section of land in High Street, near that of Mr J. Saunder's. The building is to be commenced forthwith.
i The attention of farmers and those who devote time and attention to poultry raising is directed to the advertisement of Messrs .Boyes and Canavan, appearingelsewhere, in which they offer champion and prize settings of duck's eggs for sale and also two well bred drakes. At the annual meeting of the Papa roa (Auckland) Mutual Improvement Society, held at the end of last month, interesting addresses were given by Dr Dukes, and Rev Mr Ashcroft, both well known in Motueka. The former spoke on " Lessons in Chinese," and the latter on "Village Life in England." A team of footballers from Riwaka leave on Thursday evening* to play matches at Takaka and Colling .vood. We trust they will have a successful trip and by superior play overcome their adversaries in both places. A sitting of the Old Age Pension Court was held [yesterday afternoon, when a number of applications were disposed of.
A cribbage match was held at Upper I Moutere on Saturday night the sides representing Riwaka and the Moutere, the former being conveyed to the' convincing ground by Mr Stanley Fowler. A very pleasant evening was spent, some of the games being well contested. Riwaka won by two points, the scores being Riwaka 11, Moutere 9. The following players represented the victors : —Messrs H. N. and F. Cook, J. Edmondson, W. Atkins, T. Bradley. | H. Byrne, R. N. Smith and S. Fowler. The Moutere players were Messrs 1. .tnd F. Bensemann, D. Wilkins, G. Harvey, J. Brunning, L. and F. Drogenmller, and H. Schwass. The public meeting, called for Wednesday evening by His Worship the Mayor, is to consider the question of forming a properly constituted Harbor Board for Motueka and also to discuss Hbe advisability of making it an elective body. As the whole of the ratepayers in the. Motueka district are concerned, we hope to see a representative attendance. The proceedings will commence ac seven o'clock.
Messrs Bert Tasker and Co. notify that on account of their clearing sale thoy have decided to still further reduce their stocks in order to provide space for new season's goods which will shortly come to hand. After prolonged borings, an abundance of coal has been found at Pres tonpans, Scotland, which will give emplovment to about 2,000 men. Professor Lowrie, at a' lecture to farmers at Christchurch, remarked that in no country in the world were the conditions more favourable for dairying thnn in New Zealand. It had cool summers and warm winters, and the farmers should not neglect their great opportunities in that direction. A resident of East Eyreton, Canterbury, had the misfortune to lose a thoroughbred Clydesdale mare the >ther day.
