Manoy as follows :—1 beg to bring before your Council the matter of the disposal of , nightsoil in the Borough. The businsss places and the majority of the private residences have their well or pump a few yards from the building, and are alsp obliged to bury the nightsoil in close proximity to same ; thus there is a great public danger growing in our midst, through the soakage from" what is buried, contaminating the water used for drinking and cooking, and so breeding disease, fever etc. This matter needs urgent attention as the number of shop?- ;ind residences is increasing and with them, the danger, and I would ask you to move strongly and at once, in the direction of obtaining the necessary cart and appliances for carrying out an efficient service, which could be provided for by a charge being made on those benefited. From Westport Borough Council giving particulars of fire engine hr sale ; from. Mr R. McKenzie forwarding draft copy of proposed HarborBoard Bill ; from Wharf Board asking for a conference with the Council re Mr McKenzie's letter. Witn reference to Mr Delan/'s letter it was resolved on the motion of Or Ryder seconded hy Cr Simpson, That all dog taxes unpaid be sued for forthwith. Mr Tarrant reported that on account of the continued wet weather, the stonehreaker had not been worked as yet. It was decided to secure the services of Mr J. St irnes provided Mr F. Starnes is unable to * attend to the stonebreaker within a week. Resolved, on the motion of Cr Trewavas, seconded by Or Ryder, That the ■ School Committee's request be held in abeyance until a'legal opinion on drainage matters is recerved ft cm, the Municipal Association's Solicitor. A long discussion ensued upon the above resolution. Cr Simpson said he thought it was not a matter for the Council to deal with in this particular case. Cr Trewavas was of opinion the time would soon arrive when a proper drainage would have to be considered. In connection with the request from the estate of the late R. Hursthouse, a motion by the Mayor seconded by Cr Simpson, That the work be done as requested was withdrawn and the following was carried, That the estate be applied to for half the cost of the work. Mr Manoy's letter was discussed at some length. Cr Trewavas said the supply of water, disposal of nightsoil, sewage, and probably gas,-", would have to be gone, into eventually, when, the Corporation would be compelled to take up their responsibilities, as is the case in other boroughs. The Mayor said the Council ought to do something in the matter referred to by Mr Manoy.

Cr Ryder agreed with the Mayor and said the position would have to be faced. A general discussion ensued the Mayor finally stating that when in Nelson next week he would find out the cost of all necessary appliances for an effective service. Cr Simpson reported on the conference he had with Mr Manoy re fire prevention. It was resolved that as the Government intended introducing legislation on the subject this session the proposal be held in abeyance. Councillors generally expressed sympathy with the movement. Having resolved to meet the Wharf Board, next Wednesday, as requested, the Council adjourned. A sitting of the Domain Board was also held, at which His Worship the said that when in Auckland he had interviewed Messrs Yates and Co. and had ordered the seed required for planting the Domain. It was resolved that the Mayor's action in reducing MrMcLean's rent for the diminished area of the reserve be confirmed. Accounts amounting to 49s were passed ; also that the account be transferred at the Savings Bank to Town Clerk as trustee for the Mayor.
