Oue'of the funny things in congressional oratory is the unfinished story (writes Mr Francis Leupp in the ‘Century’ in his article on the ‘Humors of Congress’). Mr Pickier, of South Dakota, was trying to illustrate a point by the tale of an Irishman to whom a dying friend had entrusted, five thousand dollars to be put into the coffin with him. The dead man was buried and the trustee bought a house with money which no one supposed he possessed, A priest, who knew of the provision of the will, called Pat to account asking him if he had really put the five thousand dollars into the coffin as agreed. “I did, your reverence,” answered Pat. -‘Then where did you get all that money ?” persisted the priest. “Begorra ! your reverence,” said Pat, with a chuckle, ‘-you didn’t suppose I’d be such a fool as to ” “The gentleman’s time has expired,” interrupted the Speaker, and Mr Pickier sat down. No coaxing could induce him to finish the story.

The Postal Department has before it j a novel penny-in-the-slot machine. You put your unstamped letter in at one slat and a penny at another with the result that the machine stamps on the letter the words, “one penny paid,” and so on for every penny. There is rejoicing among the large class of persons who make a frantic search for stamps after the shops are closed. The machine has not yet bten approved. In the Highland settlement of Waipu, in the North Island, the only n >tice posted in the kirk session house is the prize schedule of the Agricultural show, held in that district, and that the Clan M’Kay is strongly reptesented in the settlement is evidenced in the list ofjofficers. A M’Kay heads the list as president, two M’Kays are vice presidents, a M’Kay is secretary, I* and another M’Kay treasurer; two auditors arr M’Kays, and out of a General Committee of nine there are four M’Kays.
