The Agent-General cables : —Hemp is dull. Spot price for good fair Wellingtod grade, .£34 a ton ; June-July shipments, .£3l 10s. Stocks of hemp today amounting to 603 tons against 304 at this date jast year. “If the technical schools are to succeed,” states a coxu-aspondent of an Auckland papei, “the elementary instruction m chemistry, mechanics and geometry must be begun when the children pass the fourth standard. It is ixi the two yeai-s of the fifth and sixth standards that the time is lost, and it is during these years that the childi-en should be specially trained to think and reason.” A hotelkeeper at Pai-ua Bay, near VYTiangaiei, has been fined fox supplying liquor on a Sunday to a party of men who were not bona fide lodgei-s. The men stayed in the hotel on the Saturday night, but did not occupy any of the beds. In the morning they left by sailing boat to return home, and three of them were drowned. An early closing movement amongst the grocers and bootmakers of the Thames has been x-ecently brought to a successful issue, the gx-eat majority of such places of business having now commenced to close punctually at six o’clock every evening. The dearth of hotel accommodatioxi in Dunedin was acutely felt during winter show week. Ihe “Otago Daily Times,” commenting on the fact, says : “iViauy visitors to the winter show are loud in their complaints that there is not sufficient hotel accommodation in Dunedin for the number who were in the city last, week, and many, who found a difficulty in finding even a place where they; could sleep in their clothes on a sofa qr elsewhere, returned to their homes much sooner than they intended. The police on night duty sought to assist those in search of accommodation, so far as it was possible to do so, but a visit to the principal hotels and boardinghouses showed, that no further - lodger-s could be taken in, and in several instances men walked the streets all night, unable to obtain a bed.” On the road between Heriot and VRae’s Junction the peaceful agricultural country suddenly breaks out into a most gorge, the road through which is carVed out of the face ot the cliff, with a yawning ab3'ss below the beetling crags above.
