SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
A special meeting of the School Committee was held on Monday night, present: Messrs Moffatt (chairman)’ Knapp, W. and H. Boyce, Jordan. The first business, taken by consent of committee, was that of dealing with a letter received from the Secretary of the Board, stating that there was no committee allowance for the first quarter owing to the. school having been closed during the whole of that period. Hr Harris, who was present, stated that it was arranged between Mi Hogben and the Conference that the District schools should close for six weeks for the ordinary holidays as usual, that the schools should then open for three weeks or a month and then close for hoppicking. At the expiration of the 6 weeks’ holiday, an epidemic of measles and whooping cough was so prevalent throughout the district that it was found impossible to eomply with the conditions ai'ranged with Mr Hogben.
Mr Boyce moved, and Mr Knapp seconded, that the chairman write to the Secretary of the Board stating the case, and that a fortnight holiday usually allowed in winter, will not he given : applying also for financial assistance, and requesting that the letter be forwarded to the Secretary of the Education Department, Mr Hogben. Also, that Mr McKenzie. M.H.R., be requested to move in the matter.—Carried.
The chairman moved, and Mr Jordan seconded, that application be made to the Manager of the Bank of N. Zealand for an overdraft up to £l4, each member of the Committee to sign the necessary bond for security of repayment. —Carried.
The Chairman reported having accompanied Messrs Franklyn, Beuke, and Baigent, the Board’s Committee, on their visit to the school premises, when authority was given the Committee to erect a shelter shed, a front fence, to partition the large room, and repair the firewood shed;
Mr Jordan proposed and Mr H. Bdyce seconded, The Committee, having considered the proposed new scholarship regulations, are of opinion that it is a matter for the conference of school committees of the district to deal with, and recommend that the conference be held on Saturday, 20th inst, at 2 p.m, 5 also, that the neighboring committees be requested to appoint delegates, one teacher and one member of the committee to attend on that date. Carried.
Mr Knapp proposed, "seconded by Mr V, Boyce, That this committee, in consideration of its larger interests, appoints two delegates from the committee, and two teachers. Carried
On the motion of Messrs Knapp and Boyce, Messrs Moffatt and Jord an were appointed, with Messrs Harris and Wilkes, to represent this school; Carried.
The chairman reported that Mr Brougham was willing to sell the goodwill of a quarter acre of native lease, adjoining the school ground for £IOO.
On the motion of Mr Jordan, the matter was held over till next meeting for consideration.
It was resolved to hold a specia meeting of the Committee next Wednesday to deal with the tenders.
of altering the school hours was discussed informally, and it was decided to deal with the matter at the special meeting to be held on the 16th.
