SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Motueka School Committee was held on Monday evening. Present: Messrs Moffatt (chairman), Jordan, Knapp and H. Boyce; Minutes of previous meeting read and confirmed. - The chairman reported that he had obtained estimates of the works required at the school, and had forwarded full particulars to the Education Board. Correspondence from the Board was received re bad attendance at the Disti ict High School and also for the past quarter ; also forwarding scholarship regulations. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Knapp, seconded by Mr Jordan, That a special meeting be held to consider the scholarship regulations. The Headmaster reported that the average attendance for the month was 139, or 77 per cent. The roll number was 180, one being admitted and one withdrawn. The names of offenders against the Attendance Act were submitted and mention also being made of the fact that no names were given of those who had asked for exemption on account of illness, or who had been irregular in attendance during the last [wet] week. Circulars had been issued re attendance and contribution towards purchasing fuel, "and with regard to the latter a ready response had been made, and I have now in hand between .£3 and .£4."

On the motion of Mr Knapp, seconded by Mr Boyce, a vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Harris for having sent out the circulars.

The Chairman and Mr Jordan were appointed a Committee to meet a deputation from the Board re requirements of the schools.

On the motion of Mr Jordan, seconded by Mr Knapp, it was resolved, That Mr jjHarris be requested to enquire into the cause of absence of certain scholars and in tne event of receiving no satisfactory reply within seven days the names of the irregular attendants be handed to the police, with a request that the officer will take steps to enforce the Attendance Act.

Messrs Pnillips and Turner forwarded circulars re their candidature for seats on the Nelson Education Board. This concluded the business:
