CORRESPONDENCE.

To the Editor. Sir :-- The thought lias- struck rue, that as a friend to the public in the person of the late Mi- C. Parker J.P., has now been dead some time, that we show some lasting token of our esteem of his sterling qualities as a fellow colonist in the early days of our settlement. He was our chosen representative in the House of Parliament for many y T ears ; also in the Nelson Provincial Council. But it was particularly in the capacity of Justice of the Peace that he served as a most useful resident amongst us. For a period of thirty years he acted on £h>b*inch, and during that time thcra w;;s ;ioi oi.u cuse of appeal against his decisions. Then at his house, it was a case of constant and untiring attention to duties in giving advice, [and I am informed that he often saved law suits by his friendly counsel). Then a« there were but few J.P's. .in days gone bye, the number of affidavits to be declared before him, in connection vith properties and wills, weie enormous. These duties necessarily kept hiin at home, and often disorganised home arrangements of the fa only to a great degree. So, as a mark of esteem for his good qualities, I think that Motueka and the surrounding districts should show it by erecting [say, as a suggestion of mine] a suitable monument at his grave to his tnemoi y. 1 am etc., Pro Bono Publico. Motueka, June 2nd, 1903.
