The importance of the hemp industry is now becoming such that the grading staff vill have to be increased so as to permit of instruction being given to fiaxmillers in the same way that under the present excellent system dairy managers receive instruction from the Government. When it is borne in mind that, apart from the flax used in the colony for home requirements, the export from the port of Wellington alone amounts to something like £30,000 a month, it .viil be con* ceded that the industry deserves every assistance. The introduction of compulsory grading has had a mos't beneficial effect on the quality of flax submitted for export ; but to carry the system to the fullest benefit it is necessary that the Government should follow up the graders'ad vice to millers by providing for practical instruction being given to millers. This seems to be the desire of many of the millers themselves. There are few industries into which so _ many men enter with only a rudimentary knowledge, and it is r that the producers of flax should receive the same consideration as manufacturers of dairy produce. Many applications for practical demonstrations to fiaxmillers have had perforce to be refused, since there is no one on the staff who can spare the time to attend to this work.
