HIS CHOICE.
A typical specimen 6£ the " cockney! loafer, dirty, ragged and lazy, was mercilessly slaughtering "Annie Laurie." the other day, in a voice that reminded his hearers of the squealing and groaning of a heavily laden cart with the br-ake ou- going downhill, and with a twang that made passing children of Caledonia writhe in their boots to hear.. He was howling : Hend fer Bony Lowrie, Hi wad lay may doo-hoon hend dee. A man wearing a tam-o'.-shanter, a big beard, and an agonised face, came out of a house, and proffering the singer a halfpenny, said pleadingly, "Dinna fash yersei' a boot Annie Laurie, ma laddie. She's deid lang syne, puir lassie. Dee for this bawbee, an ah'll be muckle obleeged tae ye. The canal's at the back o the boose, or ye might fa' miner the steam roller ower yonder. Tak* yer choice laddie, but dee or move on." The singer changed his tune.
