] The Motueka- Riwaka bridge, which has lately been undergoing repairs, is now open, as usual, for traffic of' all kinds. At the last meeting of the Borough School Committee' it was decided to send a circular to all parents and guardians of children attending the school asking for a subscription of one shilling each for the purpose of purchasing firewood for the buildings during the approaching cold weather. The finances of the committee are not in a flourishing condition and ft was thought the application would be liberally responded, especially as the sum collected will he set aside for the object in view. A number of persons have already signified their intention of contributing. Mr I Roderick McKenzie, M H.R., for Motueka is now engaged in addressing his constituents in different parts of the electorate. Mr McKenzie will give an in M-otueka, Riwaka and adjacent localities at an early date which will be duly notified. The Motueka Borough Council will sit next Tuesday night, when, amongst other business, applications will be considered for the position of dayman and also for carting for the corporation. The Nelson Harbor Board, which has been #. very 'appy family for some time past, has commenced "to exhibit signs and tokens of discontent and the public, more particularly the ratepayers, may look forward to refreshing times. At the special meeting on Wednesday the engineer in an unofficial letter lesented the action of trfe chairman in interfering and disregarding his advice on several matters. The Board,'however, endorsed and sanctioned all the actions of the chairman. When a resolution was carried that the cutting of the channel be done by contract, instead of by day work, as originally agreed, emphatic protest was recorded by one member, another was thunderstruck and humiliated and still another was thunderstruck. Truly the Board's habitation is becoming surcharged with electric fluids. The last issue of the Christchurch Weekly Press contains an excellent portrait of the late Hon. W. Rolleston. At a Christchurch church the other morning a bridegroom waiting for his bride was startled to see the latter's dressmaker come in with the bridal gown which she could not deliver, having forgotten the lady's address. The waiting groom supplied the information, and the dressmaker hurried away to what must have been an
anxious bride. Having decided to extend their -business in Motueka, Messrs Everett Brothers have seeured tao services of Miss Bowles, formerly with Messrs Mdne and Choyce, Auckland, to take charge of the dressmaking department, which is to be opened at once. The public rre referred to a special advertisement appearing elsewhere. I The stripping and ringing of a lacewood tree in the North wood bush a short time ago is a discreditable action and we trust thfl senseless individ ua who did it will be made to smart for his mischievous conduct. For many years past the owners of this favorite picnic resort have generously permitted parties to congregate there and it is poor recompense for Miss Fearon, the present owner of the property, t,o find that valuable trees are roughly handled iand destroyed. If people will not re(frain from injuring property, thej may expect to hear of permission to use the grounds being refused. *** Subscription to MOTUEKA STAR— Three Shillin°s and Sixpence a Quarter, whidi may begin anv time A lame shoulder is usually caused bv rheumatism of the muscles and may be cured by the use of Chamberlain's Pain tfalm. On last Wednesday afternoon and evening the second annual show ,of fruit, flowers and produce was held at Dovedale. The show was a great success and a decided improvement upon that held last year. All exhibits were well represented the whole of the benches in the Luge and commodious hall being well filled. In the evening an impromptu concert was held, several local residents and some from neighboring localities contributing. In opening the show Mr J. W: Win referred to the splendid exhibit of fruit, and expressed his belief that if the settlers continued to take an interest m the show and loyally supported it, it would prove of great advantage to the district.
At a sch )ol committee election not a hundred miles from Eketahuna, where party feeling runs fairly high, one side introduced a demijohn of beer as a soother, and the effect was magical. Here are some South African produce quotations:—Bran, 12s to 13s per 1001 b ; chaff, 9s 6d to 1 0s per 1001 b; eggs, new laid. 6s 6d to 7s 8d ; colonial 3s to 3s 9d per dozen ; fowls, 3s 9d to 6s ; ducks, 5s 6d to 7s ; potatoes, medium 15s 6d to 18s per 1601 b ; best 22s ts 255.
The Mataura Ensign reports a most remarkable accident on Mr Alex Keir's farm at Charlton. A mare put her foot through a stump which was flush with the surface, and it jambed fast in the hole. She made desperate efforts to get free and finally maddened with pain and fright, wrenched the foot off at the pastern joint. She had to be destroyed.
It may not be generally known tnat in accordance with the Act passed last session the names of scholars who do not make a stipulated number of attendances at schools have to be forwarded to the police, who are supposed to take steps to ensure the children attending school regularly. The Auckland electric trams have been running about four months, during which time the company have got together a collection of about 200 umbrellas, left in the cars.
The Premier has written to the Secretary of the Progressive liberal Association, Christchurch, stating that it is the intention of the Government to introduce an amendment to the .Municipal Corporations Act next session providing for an increase in the number of councillors in boroughs. Christchurch Truth says the voices of Melba and Dolores are as different as Mr Seddoivs -'Wear-in' o' the Green'" bass, and Sir Joseph Ward's silvery million and three quarters-loan tenor. The big four-funnelled cruiser H.M.S. Argonaut was subjected to a thorough test in the China seas during the time of the Mercede's visit to Hongkong, and demonstrated the fine steaming qualities of the Westport and Welsh coal, a mixture of which was used for her fires. The vessel, which is intended in the event of war, to cut off the fast ocean liners and do other work of a smart character, steamed at the rate of 23 knots per hour and outpaced the other vessels engaged in the manoeuvres.
On the arrival of the Orontes at Freemantle last week Captain Rutven reported that a woman, aged 39, had stowed away on leaving Melbourne. The woman, who was of prepossessing appearance, will be sent back to Melbourne by the next Orient mail boat. She intended going to England, and was much distressed that her project failed.
A doctor has declared that if only twenty minutes a day were spent in physical exercise as an adjunct to mental education most people would live to 70 without a day's illness, and perhaps prolong their lives to 100 years.
