The Motueka Star PUBLISHED TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS. "Te Ora Mota Iwi." TUESDAY, APRIL 28, 1903.
A fawn jacket has been lost between the town and the Motueka bridge. Finder is requested to leave same at the Star Office. The Rev. Mr Reader, who has been placed in charge of the J/otueka Methodist Church, arrived on Friday evening to take up his duties, having driven overland from Christchurch via West Coast to Nelson. Mr Reader preached at Dovedale yesterday morning and in the evening at the local church, which was crowded.
We are requested to state that the present given to Rev. Mr Wills last Wednesday evening was subscribed for by members of the Ladies Committee and not by the congregation as stated in our last issue. The first football match of the season was played on the local cricket ground on Saturday afternoon between Riwaka and Motueka teams which resulted in a victor}' for the visitors by 8 points (a goal and a try) to nil. The play, as was to be expected, for the first game, did not disclose any play of a startling nature, the only ones who did good service being Woolf Brothers (3), H. Bate and P. Arnold for the victors and Delany, Knapp, Petiha, and Katene for the Motueka team. The tries for Riwaka were scored by Phil and T. Woolf, W. Marshall add'ing the maior points for one of the tries. Mr Cameron had charge°of the whistle and proved himself an acquisition in the football field. Mr Ballington Booth tells a story of a woman who- stood up at a Salvation Army meeting to teetity to her conversion, and with great earnestness denounced her former ways. "I wag very foolish and vain," she said; "vvordly pleasures, and specially the fashions, were my only thought. I was fond of silks, satins, jewellery, ribbons, and laces. But, ray friends, I found they were dragging me down to perdition, so I [gave them all to my sister!"' The sulky advertised by Mr J. S. Wratt has been disposed of. The four wheeled conveyance, a very useful and convenient vehicle, is still awaiting a I buyer.
