FULFILLING AN ENGAGEMENT, OR PATIENCE & ITS REWARD.
Contributed.
The Motueka team originally were to leave Motueka at 2 o’clock on Good. Friday morning for Takaka, to meet the Golden Bay team. _ Owing to the Tasman, not turning up, some men were unable to leave, so that the team which finally got away was by no means a representative one. -We, the scratch team, after scouting the country for horses all Good Friday left the Post Office Hotel at 10 p.m., i (dliven by the celebrated Jehu, J. D. Duncan, whose coach was crowded even to the roof) for the wharf to strain outeves looking for the “Greyhound of .Blind Bay,” the s.s. Lady Barkly, due at 11 p.m. After a perishing wait in the cold our patience was at last rewarded by a cry of “I see her.” This was time. The team then crawled and scrambled out to the dolphin to be boated off. Another wait, and then we had to set out along the beach ; it seemed miles, along the mudflat, then a wade in the icy water, and we reached a boat; a long pull and we wero aboard the lugger. Our spirits rose and other spirits went down. Off at last at 1.30 a.m. The trip down
the coast by moonlight was lovely. The team awoke on a glorious morning with the boat at anchor, and on the tide filling we once more touched terra firma. Here was mine host of the Globe with a waggonette, and we were soon forgetting our trials over a good breakfast. After the meal a drive up to the township, aud at 11 o’clock the cricket ground was reached. There was a good pitch covered with matting which played well all day. Golden Bay took the bat and compiled the good total of 66 runs, Di Adams and S. Fit ball scoring well. Delanv bowled well for our side, but with a ricked knee could not do himself justice. Motueka were out for 49, 17 to the bad. Satherley, Talbot, Coppins, and Paul Eiwai hit out vigorously, but, the Golden Bay bowling was too useful. Golden Bay, on resuming, totalled 49. Bowling honors must go to Paul Riwai, and Delanv, who gamely stuck to his work. Motueka with 67 to win got 17 runs, losing the game by 49. Dr Adams behind the sticks ano the bowling of Varcoe and White wat a combination we could not resist Special mention must also he made o: Golden Bay fielding, which was ven
clean all round, especially Gaukrodger and Fittall.
Our sporting friend, Mr'Q. Moefarlane, umpired for us ably all day. Luncheon was provided on the ground, and Golden Bay entertained us to a grand dinner at the Globe at 7 p.m. After dinner, speakers were the chairman, Mr Fittall, Messrs B. Boyce, Dr Adams, C. Macfarlane, a splendid day winding up pleasantly with music and song.
At 9,30 a.m., on Sunday we again embarked on the Barkly, and after a grand run close into the coast reached in me again after a “real good time.” Golden Bay will always be remembered for its good fellows and their hospitality-.
