The Motueka Star PUBLISHED TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS. "Te Ora Mota Iwi." TUESDAY, APRIL 14, 1903.

Tenders, to be sent in by the 21st instant, are invited for painting St. James' Church, Ngatimoti. Specifications maybe seen at the residence of Mr Charles E. Beatson, Ngatimoti. . The Returning Officer, Mr Tarrant, notifies that nominations for the offices of Mayor and for six Councillors- for the Borough of Motueka must be sent in on or before Saturday next, at noon. From what we can hear there will be no opposition to the return of Mr J. S. Wratt as Mayor. Several names are mentioned as candidates foi the Council, but little interest has, so far, been evinced in the matter.

The Motueka Horticultural Society's autumn show was held in the Institute yesterday and was a pronounced success, the attendance being large and the financial result most satisfactory. On account of pressure of space, we are compelled to hold over a full report preferring to do so rather than give a short one to-day. < - A notice referring to the election of three members of the Riwaka Road Board appears in our advertising columns.

We regret to have to chronicle the death of Bruce Lesley, relict, of the late Robert Pattie, which occurred at the residence, Riwaka, between four and five o'clock yesterday afternoon. The deceased, who was 83 years of a»e, was a very old resident, whose life was marked by many acts of kindness, sympathy, and consideration to and for her neighbors and the families of settlers in the district. The late Mrs Pattie, whose husband predeceased her nearly two years ago, leaves a grown up family of two daughters and four sons, namely Mrs John Rumbold, >{rs Horatio Everett, Messrs John, Thomas, R >bert, and Leslie Pattie, who will have the sympathy of the community in their loss. The funeral leaves Riwaka at t.vo o'clock to-morrow afternoon for the Riwaka Cemeterv. The diiect mail steamer Manaroa leaves Motueka for Wellington at nine o'clock this evening, and the Tasman is advertised to sail for Wellington at 11 a.m. on Thursday. Mr Laing, manager of Messrs Sar good, Son and Ewen's Wellington branch is at present on a visit to Motueka.

A large tmmber of Nelsonians advantage of the excursions to visit Motueka. The Lily, Wairoa and Tasman brought over about 450 and others came overland in traps and on bicycles. The day was *all that could be desired and the visitors passed a most pleasant time, attending a cricket match and the Horticultural Society's show. The s.s. Manaroa also arrived in port with a number of excursionists from Wellington. The town presented an animated appearance. CHAMBERLAIN SPAIN BALM Has no equal as a household liniment. I j is the best known remedy for rheumatism lame back, quinsy and glandular swellings, while for sprains, bruises, burns and scalds it is invaluable. One application gives relief. Try it. A.Manoy sells it. Every dog will have his day, And life its ups and downs, The face may wear a smile to-day, To-morrow perhaps a frown ; When things run smooth we little guess What we may yet endure, As coughs and colds, 'tis then we bless WOODS' GREAT PEPPERMINT CURE.

Yesterday morning St. Thomas' Church was filled to overflowing, the cause being the marriage of Miss Mary Herrick Hursthouse, daughter of fhe late Richmond Hursthouse, to Mr Samuel A. Atkinson, of Wellington, son of the late Sir Harry Atkinson. The bride, who was given away by her brother, Mt John Hursthouse, was becomingly dressed in white silk, tucked and frilled, with orthodox veil and orange hlossoms (carrying a beautiful bouquet) and was attended as bridesmaids by Misses Kate and Ruth . Hursthouse, Atkinson and Chaytor, all attired in white silk, trimmed with insertion and Miss Dorothy Hurst-* house dressed in string coloured muslin with blue silk sash, and hat to match. Mr William Hursthouse atten-. ded as best man. The Rev. Thomas Johnston officiated at the marriage ceremony, which was partly choral, Mrs Symes presiding at the organ. The wedding party left the church followed by good wishes and a good sprinkling of rice etc. Mr and Mrs Atkinson left for Nelson overland shortly after toe ceremony. The wedding guests were entertained at „the__resi'dence of Miss Fearon. _ For the Easter services at Stf Thomas' church, the building was most tastefully decorated with ferns and evergreens by members of the congregation. Appropriate addresses were delivered or? Good Friday and on Easter day. We are compelhed to hold over reports of the cricket matches played ati Takaka last Saturday and on the local cricket ground yesterday, Both matches were, however, lost by representatives of Motueka. ; The high opinions expressed by Wellington and Nelson visitors who attended the Horticultural Society's show yesterday were distinctly favorable and should be a source of gratification to the society and especially to those who worked hard to make the function a success. Comparisons with similar shows as to quality were decidedly in favor of our local institution. Alfred A. Howlett, a millionaire bauker, of Syracuse, New York, planned a remarkable party for his 82nd birthday on the 17th of February. The guests were to be 125 widows. Not a man or an old maid was invited. The musicians were to be women and Howlett intended to be the only man present.

It is estimated that during the last nine months no fewer than 210 new houses have been erected within the Borough of Palmerston North, which may be taken as indicat : rig the prosperous condition of the farmino- community of the district. The Rev. Marion Lake, one of the most learned theologians and eloquent orators in the State of Mississippi, hasbeen convicted of bigamy at Port Gibson. The evidence showed that he had married no fewer than seven wivps. In defence it was pleaded that Mr Lake was insane, or he would never have done such a thing. For Bronchial Cough, take Woods' Great Peppermint Cure, Is 6d and 2s 6d everywhere. Authentic Medical Opinions worth knowing.—Dr Osborne says—"l use Sander and Sons Eucalypti Extract as a spray for nasal catarrh, low fever, asthma, etc with great success. 1 find this preparation superior to all others."—Dr Stah ; "I have used various preparations of Eucalyptus but I get better results from Sander and Sons Eucalypti Extract than from anv others."—Dr Preston: "I never use any Eucalyptus preparation other than Sander and Sons, as I found the others to be almost useless."—Dr Hart: "It goes without saying that Sander and Sons Eucalypti Extract is the best in the market." In influenza, fevers, throat and lung troubles' diphtheria, " diarrhesa, dvsentry, kidney complaints, rheumatism, wounds, sprains ulcers, etc., it is invaluble. See that you get Sander and Sons, and reject spurious preparations which are sometimes supplied by unscrupulous dealers.
