Re peddling tramps, a writer in the Bulletin says : Once knew an artful bagman who. when things were bad, would grind two bricks together bottle the dust, and - offer it from house to house as the "Great American Mosquito and Fly Eradicator" at 2s 6d a bottle. He had a good gab and a persuasive manner, and the bogus powder found sale. Once, however^a burly bullock driver reviled the vendor as a fraud, but the latter, who had been imbibing freely, took the bullock's wrath as a good joke. "Won't kill 'em ! Why you couldn't 'ave used it rignt, old man. You've got to tickle their ribs till they laugh, and then throw the powder down their throats and choke 'em."

Rendering home unendurable for j the re**, of his family by an insatiable j passion for whistling, David Dunn, of West 44th Street, New York, w:is brought before Judge Wyatt by his mother. Even in the court no one was able to keep the boy quiet and I e annoyed the judge by whistling all the popular airs of the day. H e was committed to the hospital for inquiries as to his sanity. Captain Mahan, the eminent naval I authority, writes in his new book : "There is certainly an impression in America, which 1 share, that Great Britain for various reasons has been tending to lose ground in economical an.l enmmercial matters. Whether this is a passing phase, or a symptom of moie serious trouble, time must show. Should it prove permanent, and Germany at the same time gain upon her continuously, as for some years past she has been doing the relative positions of the two as sea powers may be seriously modified. The danger appears to exist, and, if so, the wajtchman of the British press should cry aloud and spare n.'.t until all classes of their community realise it in its fundamental significance." We have evidently some ingenious rascals in this, community (writes the North Otago Times). The other day an Oamaru tradesman, who has a penny-in -the slot machine, discovered a penny in the till with two heads on it. The game of "two-up" is obviously in vogue, and the penny in question had been cleverly constructed out of two, the pieces fitting so exactly that there was some diff culty in detecting the imposture. With a penny of this description the youthful " gambler could makp things liv.dj for his opponent. He had apparently dropped this peculiar penny into the slot by mistake.
