A Dunedin correspondent wires as follows :—"I have good reason for saying that Mr McNah will not be a candidate for the Speakership, and under the ciicumstances Mr Guinness' election is assured."
An interesting experiment has been carried out at the artillery ranges at Steinfeld, It is cc%nmonly known that'a balloon is extremely difficult to hit. A balloon was anchored at the height of 2500 yards, the gunners being kept in ignorance of the range. It took twenty two shots to get the approximate range., but it was not till the sixty fourth round that the balloon was hit, and then only slightly. However, the small tear was sufficient to bring it slowly to the ground. A paddock of oats on the farm of Mr B. Lissaman, Elaiapoi, has threshed out 136 bushels to the acre.
Mr Dive, director of the Eltham Co-operative Dairy Company, has informed a representative of the Mana\vatu Daily Times that with five bacon companies operating in Taranaki the available supply of pigs is not sufficient to keep one of them going. "Put my gun in im r coffin " was the request made in his will by Francis Bagoly, a Hungarian big game hunter, who has died, aged 98.
A distressing case of suicide occurred at Glen lones (N.S.W.) last week. While Mr W. R. Goodman, accountant at the A.J.S. Bank, was at work he heard the report of firearms in the manager's room, and on rushing to ascertain the cause saw Mr G. Ramsav, the manager, seated in a chair with his head on the table and a revolver beside him. There was a wound on the sine of the head, from which blood was oozing freely. The bullet had evidently passed right thiough the brain. Medical assistance was quickly obtained, and the unfortunate man was removed to the hospital, but life was then extinct: Deceased leaves a and young family. "There air two things," said Josq Billings, "for which a man is generally onprepared. They are—twins." Still less is a man prepared for twins born in two different years. Yet Chicago is still being amiised over the fact which is, naturally, no\r some few weeks v old. In the house of one of the "well-known inhabitants a child was born shortly before 1 1 o'clock on the fjlast night of the old year, and soon after midnight, a «econd came ink- the world. The result is that though the children are twins, they will have birthdays on different days, for the one will have to be celebrated on the 31st of December and the other on the Ist of January of the following year.
