THE BIGGEST AND FASTEST SHIP IN THE WORLD.

There was launched last August, on the Oder, to the order of the Norddeutscher Lloyd Company a new steam er, which is to be ready in April and is claimed to be the largest and fastest afloat. With recollections of the Corinthic fresh in our mind, it is interesting to note, that the Kaiser Wilhelm 11., is nearly 2<50 feet longer, 9 feet broader, with a moulded depth of 52 feet 6 inches as against her 41 feet. Her four funnels tower 230 feet from her keel, and each is as big as a railway tunnel. She is estimated to travel at a rate of 23 or 24 knots an hour as compared with the Corinthie’s 12|. But at what a cost this extra speed is obtained, may be gathered from the fact whereas the Corinthic burns 80 tons of coal a day, Kaiser Wilhelm II .will* consume, it is anticipated, nearly, eight times that hourly, for the supply, not only of her four sets of main engines, but of another 124 engines of one sort and other utilized in the internal arrangements of the ship. Though actually the largest ship vet built, she is such only by a very little, being hut feet longer than the Oceanic, and 6 feet longer than the Cedric, both flying the White Star flag. For her trip “across the pond” to America she will take in her bunkers 5600 tons of coal ! Vessels of her speed are not very likely therefore to make trips to the Antipodes jnst yet. She converts’23o tons of water into steam. She will have eight decks, and will accommodate 775 first class passengers, 343 second class, 770 third class, and carry in addition a crew of 600. The diningroom will seat 554 persons.
