CRICKET.

A team of players selected to represent the Motueka Cricket Ciub, journeyed overland last. Saturday morning to try conclusions with the Nelson Athletic Club. The last match resulted in a tie and it was then decided that another should be played later on in the season. A start was made on Trafalgar Park shortly after two o'clock. The Athletics captained by A. Kinzett, having won the toss, decided to bat and in their first managed to register a total of 13. The bowling of Harvey Holycake, for the visitors, completely demoralised the batsmen, he having secured 7 wickets for 4 runs—a performance worthy of Spofforth of immortal tame. A. Askew, also, scattered the l-timber right merrily being credited with 3 vvickeis far 9 runs. The Motueka boys followed putting together 116 runs, the highest scorers being Holyoake 39, Askew 19, Fowler 15, and W. Boyes 11. The best bowling average of the Athletics was secured by Fanthorpe, he being ci edited with 8 wickets for 40 runs. In their second innings the Nelson players managed to bring their total up -to 63, Holyoake once mure doing good execution, obtaining 7 wickets for 22. Motueka thus won by an innings and 40 runs The wicket was hard and fast and the fielding of the Motueka players was mos: creditable, no overthrows or byes being scored against them. The game was played in good spirit, and at the conclusion hearty cheers werj exchanged and especial cheers for umpires, score: s and the coachman. In the evening the visitors were entertained at a smoke conceit and a pleasant night was spent with music, songs, recitations and toasts the

whole cancluding with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. The Motueka players were conveyed to and from Nelson in a coach skilfully driven by Mr S Fowler, the trip being voted a most enjoyable one. The officious, meddlesome, and offensive writer in one of the Nelson papers who stated that any second rate team of cricketers is a match for an eleven from the Motueka district, must have had a 1 ude awakening last Saturday when the result of the match, Motueka versus Athletics, became known. The garrulous individual in question will find that when it comes to a question of deeds the players on this side of the Bay can not only hold their own but can always give a good account of themselves, and it has become a fixed opinion with us that had the local boys been more largely drawn from when the team was selected to do battle against the Englishmen the "licking" the Nelsonites received would not have been so marked.
