The Motueka Star PUBLISHED TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS. "Te Ora Mota Iwi." TUESDAY, MARCH 3, 1903.

It was mentioned at last night's meeting of the School Committee byMr Quayle that a lad had arrived in Motueka irotn Takaka in order to attend the High School as soon as it was opened. It must be gratifying to the e nnmittee and also to the teachers to know that the advantages of such an institution are being recognised by parents of children residing at a distance. When it is remembered that twelve months ago there was a fear the experiment of establishing a High School in our midst would not receive general support, the present position of the school is distinctly encouraging, the number of the roll being now more than double what it was when Mr Wilkes took charge. Of the High schools established at Wesbport, ton, and Motueka, the last mentioned, taking the population as a basis, is the best attended, and with the presont capable staff we feel confident the premier position will be maintained. We are optimistic on this question, and have been all along, and we hope to s : e +he day-when the Committee will ! ave to face the problem of extending ; the present class room in order to proIvide seating .accommodation tor the lads and lasses who will ere long be sent to Motueka to receive a secondary education which will be of -assistance to them when they have to take up 'heir duties as citizens of the Common-

wealth. As an adjunct to the High school the starting of technical classes in out midst deserves consideration, and we propose, on a future occasion, to have something to say in reference thereto.
