For some half bred Jersey heifers, oming to calve, a Midhirst farmer was offered LlO each a few weeks ago. The Westport Times says :—Mr W. Townson,iwho has been for some time past botanising in the Paparoa ranges, points out that the highest peak, which is over 5000 feet high, and is, consequently the most important mountain of these ranges, is without a name, which is- absurd, as tourists visiting this district on enquiring its name, are simply told that it is a portion of the Paparoas. Mr Townson, who has represented the matter to the Surveyor-General,-suggests that the mountain be called Mount Kelvin. The promoters of the "Sydney Thousand/' the biggest handicap race yet neld in the world, have received a very satisfactory entry for the rich event, which is set down for running on the Sydney cricket ground on the 7th March. All the best handicap riders in the Commonwealth have nominated consequently a fast and exceedingly interesting race should result for the .£IOOO, which is being split up as follows:—First, L 750; second, LIOO - third, jLSO ; and Idoo for distribution amongst the best winners. The big race is to be one mile—a distance that is becoming very popular amongst riders and public alike, and one which certainly produces faster riding.
A few days ago a young lady whilst in the convalescent Stage after an attack of diphtheria left her room against the advice of her medical attendant to fulfil a wedding engagement at Ballarat, Victoria.
