The Motueka Star. PUBLISHED TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS. “Te Ora Mote Iwi." TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1903.

We are informed that at the meeting of the Borough Council, to be held this evening, Or Moflatt will move as follows “This Council respectfully requests that the Wharf Board will take the necessary steps to increase the ard’s powers by promoting such legislation as will, Ist: Make the Board an elective body of five members representative of the whole district. 2nd * Enabling the Board to negotiate loans for reclamation and other necessary works. 3rd :To provide as far as possible for future contingencies thus placing the Board as advantageously as possible in view of future developments of the district. The Council promising the Board support and assistance towards that end.” It will be remembered that some months ago a petition advocating the conversion of the present nominee body (against the members of which no personal objection can be advanced) into one enlarged to siy five 01 seven members, representing the whole of the Board aiea, and elected by the ratepayers. At his last political meeting in Motueka Mr Roderick McKenzie referred to the petition and advised that as it would be considered by a moribund Parliament, it would be better to wait for another year, when he would undertake to give effect to the wishes of the people in the direction indicated. As is well known, the legislation which brought into being the present Board was of a hasty and imperfect nature and it is felt by many that an amending Act is required to enlarge the functions of such a responsible and important body. The motion quoted above, if approved of by the councillors, will give Mr McKenzie a certain amount of authority to act for the rate payers, and if it is thought necessary later on his hands can be strengthened by a petition signed by the public in favor of making the present institution a Uarbo" Board with the same privileges and powers as are given to other Harbor Boards in the colony.
