Recently a case of anthrax was reported from Woodlands, and now the Western Star is informed that the dreaded disease has made its appearance at Limestone Plains, two cows and one horse belonging to Mr James Pirie having died. Mr Gilmour, inspector of stock for Wallace, proceeded to the locality to see that the carcases of the animals were properly destroyed. The cases have broken out in Southland are traceable to the animals having licked up imported bonedust, in which the spores of anthrax were to be found. It is probable that the battleship Ring Edward YII., now building at Devonport, will be ready for sea by September, 1904, six months sooner than expected.
