-The Collingwood County Council has at present in hand the expenditure of no less a sura than over .£9OOO, of which ,£6OOO is in Takaka Riding and 1.3200 in Aorere Hiding. Mr Sandisun, County Surveyor and Engineer, has his hands full in laying out all contracts involving the disposal of this substantial sujm. Mr H. M. Rockell, manager of Ruahine creamery, had a somewhat startling experience on the 24th ult. He was proceeding to Rangiwahia factory with a big load of cream, and sat on the front of the cart going up the long Pukerirnu Hill. It was very close and just beginning to rain, and he heard several very loud rolls of thunder, when all at once there was an explosion, and he was knocked off the cart on to the road in front of the wheel. Apparently the horse got a shock as well, for when Mr Rockell regained consciousness he was behind the cart, the horse having turned round instead of running over him. Mr Rockell was stone deaf for half-an-hour, and as cjld as ice. A sad shooting fatality occurred at Springhurst (Victoria) on Sunday, January 4th. A youth named John Patrick Mayer, aged 8£ years, with his brother Matthew, aged 17, John Wighton, aged 16, and Andrew Fitzgerald, aged 14, went rabbit-shooting. All but the first-named carried rifles. They tracked a rabbit into a log, and younger Mayer went to the end of the log to stje it dislodged: As it ran out past young Mayer one of the boys fired,' the bullet passing through Mayer's side. As he was struck he exclaimed "Oh; Mat!" His brother Mat ru.sh.ed over to him and said, "What ! are you shot ?" He answered "Yes," and fell hack dead.
