During the recent bush fires on the East Coast, a settler it Tarewa dug a hole and placed his wife and family in it when the fire was raging. The fire passed through a nikau grove an acre in extent at the Hot Springs at Morere but fortunately destroyed only the undergrowth. The Observer says there is quite an influx of doctois into Auckland in search of likely practices and asks "what is the reason ? Wanganui is also being exploited iu the same way by medical men from elsewhere. There must surely be a slump in the trade in some less favoured parts of the colony to cause so many medicoes to change camp just now. A sea-faring man, while in the Continental Hotel at Edinburgh, discharged a revolver shot into the fireplace. The barmaid was alarmed at first, but when the man banded her the firearm to put aside she toved with it, and, after pulling the trigger twice without effect, remarked : "What a dreadful thing for people to commit suicide." She playfully put the revolver to her temple and pulled the trigger. The charge exploded, and she fell dead. Things are done quickly in America. Mr Peter Martin, a rich New York business man, thought he would get man ied the other day. He wrote tothe proprietor of a boot factory : "I have supplied you for some ten years. Now I will give you an order. Just look me out a pretty brunette from your staff whom I can marry. Will call tomorrow." There .vas great excitement in the factory when tho letter was read. True to his' word, Mr Martin did call, spent five minutes in looking over the dark haired factory girls, selected one, took her out in his cab, and married her a quarter of an hour later. A strange story was related recently at Birmingham Police Court. A young ununiformed policeman had managed to capture some roughs singlehanded, but had evidently more than enough to do to take them into oustody. Seeing this, a plain clothts officer came to the rescue ; but the original captor, thinking this an infringement of his right and an insult to his capacity, resented the pioffered ass'stance. More than this he did, ta his ultimate regret. He at once released his prisoners, and held their coats while they pummelled his despised ally. For this base ingratitude he was immediately hailed "before his betters," and the chief constable while no doubt appreciating his valour, dispensed with his services. Some curious results have been arrived at as a consequence of an investigation into the race character of Chicago. From these figures it seems that Chicago is practically a foreign city. It is often said that it contains more Germans than any city in Germany except two or three, more Irish thm any city except Dublin, mere Swedes than any city except Stockholm more Norwegians than any city except Christiana, and more Poles than any city in Poland. This is undoubtedly true if citizens of foreign parentage are to be considered in the count. Sir Joseph Ward has placed his eldest son at the laneoln Agricultural College.
