Messrs "Lucas and Hodkin, who have recently been engaged sounding and dredging for scientific purposes Lake Wakatipu and other lakes in the North Island, have just completed the sounding of Lake Manapouri, where they have taken 200 soundings, says the Qta go Daily Times. The following is a list of the deepest soundings in the various lakes:—Lake Taupo (North Xsland), largest lake in New Zealand, 534 ft; Lake Rotorus, 84ft; Lake Rotoiti 228 f t; Lake Waikaretnoana, 846 ft, the last named lake being about 2000 ft above sea level. The only lakes sounded so far in the South Island by Mr Lucas are Wakatipu and Manapouri. Lake Wakatipu was found to be 1241 ft, and Lake Manapouri 1458 ft —216 ft deeper than Wakatipu, hitherto considered the deepest lake in. the colony, and while the bottom of Wakatipu lies about 200 ft below sea level, the bottom of Manapouri reaches to the great depth of 861 ft below sea level. Eruit bulks very largely among Tasmanian exports. Fot the year ending last July the values of exports were as f )llows -—Fruit, .£418,000 ; wool, 251,000; potatoes, .£309,000 ; oats, £16,000.
