The Motueka Star PUBLISHED TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS. "Te Ora Mota Iwi" TUESDAY, JANUARY 6, 1903.

At the last meeting of the Good Intention Lodge of Oddfellows, Riwaka, Bro. Ernest James was appointed Secretary. Yesterday, afternoon His Worship the Mayor, Mr J. S. Wratt and Mr G. W. Jenkins met at the wharf to make preliminary arrangements in connection with the erection of a drinking fountain to the memory of troopers who died in South Afiica.

The following are the vital statistics for the Motueka District for the month of December, as recorded by Mr H. A. Tarrant, Registrar : —Births 6, deaths 2, marriages nil. For the year ended 31st of December the record was as follows: —Births 72, deaths 27, marriages 20.

Last week the sheep owners of Takaka met in the township toconsider the question of driving their surplus stock to the Canterbury markets, as was done last year. The satisfactory i esulls which followed the course adopted were commented upon and we are infcrmed arrangements are to be made with drovers to convey mobs of sheep overland shortly. Mr John Cameron, of Edendale, Otago. who was a pupil of Mr John Sawers, well known in the dairying world, has been appointed manager of Messis Rankin and Son's butter factory at Motueka, which commenced operations last week. The creameries at Brooklyn and Ngatimoti to be worked in conjunction with the factory are nearing completion. The Collingwood correspondent of the Golden Bay News writes :—Our brass band, now under the leadership of Mr G. Thorne, is doing gopd work. On Christmas Eve the music was excsllent, and was listened to with much relish, and many of the numerous visitors were agreeably surprised at the performance. Messrs Johnston and Co; "Limited, in3ichants of Wellington, forward us a handy and useful desk calendar, for 1903, of the London and Lancashire Fire Insurance Company, for which they are agents. The dates of each month are printed on separate sheets, at the back spaces being provided for memoranda for each day. In addition to this there is a calendar- for 1904, a ready reckoner, English values of foreign money, and a table which enables .ilia, business- man to fin<l out the number of days from any day in one month to the same day in any other month. The South British Fire Insurance Company, for which Mr H. A. Tarrant is the local agent, forwards us a nicely got up office calendar for the year 1 903.

The revenue of the Motueka Licensing District will V e benefitted this year to the extent of LlO, being the amount for a packet license takeLi out by the owners of the s s. Manaroa. We trust other owners trading to this poi t will follow the example set by the Wellington, Havelock and Motueka Steamship Company. The Proprietors of the WellingtonEvening Post forward us a handsomely got up booklet conveying Christmas and New Year greetings and giving illustrations of several departments of their vast establishment in Willis Street. Among other cards received is one calling for especial mention sent by the proprietors of the Westport Times and Star.
