SCHOOL CONCERT.

Mr T. A. Harris and his staff are to be congratulated on the success ot the entertainment given by the scholars of the Motueka School on Monday, 22nd inst.., at the Institute. The audience, a very large one, demonstrated their approval of the various items submitted in a hearty and appreciative manner. As nearly every family was represented amongst the performers great interest was manifested. The programme consisted of a pianoforte duet by Misses N. Jennings and L. Batchelor, a very creditable performance ; a recitation by Master J. Mander was “a piece well spoken” ; the “Canadian Boat song” by girls and the action song “Gay and Noisy Rooster” were excellently given. Master H. Goodman mid Miss G. Fowler in the dialogue, “Dolly’s Doctoi,” were heartily applauded ; the scarf drill by girls was a very pretty performance. Recitations - ere given by Misses G. Jordan, (luilty or not Guilty); N. Moffatt Lesson), M. Fowler (Hang up Uie Baby’s Stocking), M. Moffatt (My Dead Doll), B. Moffatt (Peony Jane’s l fainting fit) ; allof these young lady eloeutionists being very successful. A duet Fresh Fish” by masters N. King and tV. McFarlane deserves special mention theL same may also be said of Corporal Mug (L. Temperton] and his “awkward sSjviad on parade,” numbering 10 very raw recruits. “The Bells” clicrus and “Wotl’t you buy my pretty Flowers” (song and chorus] were both fairly well rendered ; the action song “Japanese Fan” by 18 little girls was item /lulling for special commendation ; the ; same performers were equally successful in their action songs “Busy little I Mother” and the last item on the proI gramme “Good Night.” The debate k&ivls versus boys, [ll performers) V “Should women be eligible for ParliaI ment” was an innovation. Miss E. I Rankin contributed a pianoforte solo. ■ The club drill by girls was exceedingly * well done. Misses M. McFarlane and R. Simpson —two very young ladies—- ' are to be complimented on their ren- ' dering of the duet, “You shant play in , our Yard.” The item 10 Little \ Nigger Boys, was very funny, Masters C. Drummond and H, McFarlane being ( conspicuous performers. The nigger ' act created great laughter and consisted as it did of songs, connundrums etc. At the conclusion of the entertainment Wis Worship the Mayor, Mr J. S. Wratt, who, during the evening had

presided and announced the various items, explained that the object of the entertainment w T as to procure fundsfor the purchase of a piano for the school, and stated that the sum of LlO had been netted that evening. He hoped the scholars would perform again, great credit was due to the teachers for the proficiency shown and the Mayor moved a hearty vote of thanks to the teachers, which motion was carried by acclamation: Mr Harris on behalf of the teachers suitably acknowledged the vote.
