“Without doubt che recent electionfor Egmont,” says the Taranaki Herald has been the most remarkable in the annals of New Zealand. After the polling, when the final returns were being made Waitaia, it was found that a box of votes belonging to Piriaka, on the Wanganui river, was still lying at Ongarnha, on the Main Trunk Railway. Unless secured at ‘once they would travel to Waitaia by way of Auckland, and arrive too late to be valid. A messenger desnatched from Mokau in the very early hours of December 2nd, the last day on which they could be received, traversed 24 miles of bad roads in 21 hours of darkness, and passed on his quest to another, who received the votes from a third messenger, despatched from Ongaruhe, after al2 miles ride. Successive persons took up return running, but when Mokau was reached again at 10 a.m, the river was so high that it was impossible to get a horse across. The messenger accordingly crossed in a boat and was provided with another mount on the other side. Once again he had to change his horse to pass a block in the road, but at 1.15 p.m, less than five hours before the expiration of the statutory term would have rendered them invalid, he handed in his returns safely to the recording officer at Waitaia. A young man took his best girl to the play, at which they had some misunderstanding, and “another fellow” saw her home afterwards. Next day, by post, came a little bill, requesting payment of 2s, price of ticket to the entertainment ! Only 3381 bales of wool have been consigned in four months from Warren (New South Wales) in lieu of 15,000 bales last yew.
