BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Motueka Borough Council was held on Tuesday last. Present : His Worship the Mayor, [Mr J. S. Wratt] in the chair, Crs Satherley, Grooby, Trewavas, Simpson, Ryder, Edwards, Thorp. Cr Knapp sent a notice of apology for non attendance. Minutes of previous and also of special meeting, read and adopted. The following accounts were passed for payment: G. Chapman L 4 12s 6d, C. Boyes L 4 12s, W. King 12s 9d, Town Clerk L 5. Mr Charles Lewis wrote re subsidy foi prospecting at Table Land, asking the Council to support his application to the Government in respect thereof. A long discussion took place upon the subject members generally being of opinion that the application should be endorsed by the Collingwood Council, in whose territory the land is situated. Cr Edwards who knew the district well supported the application, as it would be a good thing for Motueka if the Tableland was thoroughly prospected: As a resort for tourists it would, when the beauties of the locality became more widely known be much frequented. The Mayor would strongly favor supporting Mr Lewis’ application if the locality was within the Council’s jurisdiction. Eventually it was resolved on the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Ryder, That the Town Clerk write to the Collingwood County Council enquiring whether that body has recom® mended Mr Lewis’ application to the Mines Department for assistance in prospecting and if not the Borough Council strongly recommends his application. although he is prospecting in the County Council’s boundaries which are beyond the jurisdiction of the Motueka Borough Council. Letter received from Constable Fitzsimmons, drawing the Council’s attention to Sections 4 and 5 of the Second Hand Dealers’ Act 1902. From the Department of Agriculture forw'arding copy of the Birds’ Nuisance Act 1902 with list showing districts into whiph it is proposed to divide the Middle Island, and asking if the proposed division met' with the approval of the Council. Letter' received. From the Treasury Department stating LI 218 s 6d had been

placed to credit of the Council, being balance due on river protective works. From the District Health Officer, Nelson, regretting that that the sanitary Inspector did not call upon the Town Clerk during his late visit and giving reasons for not calling. Dr Frengley also stated that he intended making a personal visit and inspection of the Borough. From counsel to the municipal association, stating that it was competent to reduce number of members of the Borough Council. From Mr Robert Bartlett offering his traction engine for sale on easy terms; also enclosing account for* £4 10s. Resolved, on the motion of Cr Edwards. seconded by Cr Simpson, That Mr Bartlett’s account be paid, and that he be thanked for his offer and informed that the council is not in need of the engine: From T. Steele, re patent process for burning clay for road metal etc. . Received. From J: F. Hursthouse, conveying to the Council and citizens the thanks of himself and other members of the family for expressions of sympathy in their recent loss. From the Treasury Department forwarding .£ls subsidy in connection with recent Coronation celebrations. Letter received from W. King asking for permission to cut grass in Fearon street. Permission granted providing owners of land abutting the street do not require it. It was also resolved that the clerk give permission to cut grass on the public streets. It was resolved on the motion of Cr Simpson, That the sum of ,£2l be paid to the Whakarewa Trust, refund in connection with river protective works. Resolved on the motion of Cr Thorp seconded by Cr Satherley, That the notice of motion re by law in connection with the driving of horses unattended through the public streets be passed. It was resolved that all outstanding rates be sued for if not paid within a month. This concluded the business.
