BOROUGH COUNCIL

The ordinary meeting of the Mot lift ka Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present: His Wor snip the Mayor (Mr J. W-ratt). in t.l>e chair, Crs Satherley, Knapp, Simpson, Edwards, Moffatt, Trewavas, Ryder, Grooby and Thorp. Minutes of previous meeting read and adopted.

The following amounts were passed for payment :—River protection .£2l Douglas £1 9s 4d, Chant £1 2s, Bam - f >rth 16s, Rankin and Sons £4 Os Bd, A. Manoy 9s 6rl, Town Clerk ,£5, dog tickets 7s 6d, C. Bartlett 22s 6d, Miller 365, Loyal Motueka Lodge 3,55’ W. King L2 6s 9d, Boyes L 6 15s, Chapman L 6 15s, G. Tarrant 6s 6d, Inspector of nuisances dog tax collector L2 14s.

Resolved on the motion of Cr-Ryder seconded by His Worship the Mayor, that all owners of unregistered dogs be sued at once.

His Worship the Mayor reported with reference to the deputation which interviewed the Waimea County Council re demand made for upkeep of roads and bridges. The deputation had thoroughly discussed the question and they ended up by agreeing to contribute LSO on the understanding the Waimea Council contributed a like amount for the upkeep of roads within the Borough, in fact, there was a mutual understanding that things should remain as they are except that if something exceptional in connection with the bridge cropped up the Borough Council would meet them in the matter.

Oa the motion of Cr Satherley seconded by Cr Ryder, it was resolved, That a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to the deputation. It was also carried, on the motion of Cr Moffatt, seconded by Cr Satherley, That the expenses of the deputation be paid.

A discussion took place with reference to the practice of driving horses, unattended, through the main street of the Borough, a piactice which was characterised as dangerous. Mr Bryant waited on the council re his position with reference to the gravel reserve. The minutes of the old Road Board bearing on the subject were read, and after discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Cr MofFatt, seconded by Cr Knapp, That Mr Bryant be ofFered the use of the reserve conditionally upon keeping the land clear of gorse. The term to be from year to year ; the rates for the last two years to be remitted and no further rates to be charged on the land -While so held. And the Council strongly recommends that their successors rene w the agreement with Mr Bryant for a further term i f five years, from year to year. The Council reserving the right to take gravel from the pit as required. It was agreed that Cr Edwards confer with Mr Bryant as to the road to the gravel pit.

A letter was received from the Chief Surveyor, Nelson, informing the Council that the Chief Engineer of Roads bad returned voucher sent in for ,£ls 8s 6d, pointing out that various items in the detailed account were not legitimate expenditure for actual protective works, and asking the Town Clerk to amend the application as suggested in the memo forwarded. Resolved on the motion of Cr Moffatt, seconded by Or Edwards, That the Clerk write explaining the whole position and stating that as the circular re charging these items against the -work did not come to hand after the accounts were made up it is now difficult to finance the matter owing to the number of contributors associated with the works, . but that the Council will

deduct the present ..value' of barrows?and sheds from the account. It was decided to effect; repairs to Wallis’ road. ... Or Moffett drew the attention of the Council to the fact that a map of the present and proposed drains within the Borough had not .been, a"* .re quired by the Act., ' Afteff discussion the- matter was deferred for the time being. It was resolved on the motion of Cr Thorp, seconded by Cr Edwards, That in future the Town Clerk give the necessary authority to erect verandahs Over the footpaths. Proposed by Or Simpson, seconded by.C.r„Grooby, and carried, That £f be voted for the purchase of heads' and eggs,of blackbirijs jmd thrushes, that Mr C. Boyce be appointed collector, with a remuneration of ten per cent on all moneys gaid out., f ! Cr MofFatt gave notice of motion, That in the opinion of this Councii the time has qrj-ived when provision should" be made for the lighting of, the streets. It was decided to consider, this motion and the question of naming the streets at a special meeting of the Council, to be lield on the,2B-th instant at 7.30 p.m. -- At the suggestion of Cr Thorp the Town Clerk agreed to furnish a rough sketch map of the streets within the borough for the guidance of Couucillots. This concluded the business.
