In connection with the above, the following record for the month of September, taken at 12.45 daily by Mr G. S. Huflam, is of public interest: Total Rainfall in incnes.

Speaking at the annual meeting of the Manchester and District Branch of the N.S.P.C.C., held in the Manchester Town Hall, on July 10th, the Chairman, both of the gathering and of the Branch, Mr Harold Agnew, said, with reference to the report which had been read, that they had still to deal with much neglect and starvation. Nearly 300 permits have been issued in Adelaide to persons desirous of going to South Africa. Of these 220 intend to settle in the country permanently. Private George Stewart, of the 2nd Gordon Highlanders, has just returned to his home at Arbroath, after going through 33 engagements without receiving a scratch. Money can be made by rearing calves. A Manawatu settler, with the aid of Tolley’s calf meal, reared all his calves last season. The cost of the meal averaged Is per head, and he sold them when five months old for thirty five shillings each. "While two farm hands were scuffling near Orange (N.S.W.) the other day one of them fell on a knife, which entered his fack and caused fatal injuries.
