The MOTUEKA STAR PUBLISHED TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS. “Te Ora Mota Iwi.” FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1902.
Messrs J. A. Macdonald and John Pollock, honorary officers of the Nelson Acclimatization Society, brought over to Motueka, last Tuesday evening, 15,000 brown trout fry, which they placed in the Orinoco and other tributaries of the Motueka river the following day. The newly spawned fish had a very healthy appearance. It is proposed to liberate another 10,000 higher up the liver in about three, weeks’ time. Tke Nelson Society deserves the hearty support of all disciples of Izaak Walton, of cherished memory, for it has vie voted no small portion of its income to the purchase of suitable fish with which to stock the rivers withiu its teiritory. So far as the Motueka river is concerned, their efforts to provide anglers with abundant sport for the license necessary to whip its waters have been most successful, and the river is now well known throughout New Zealand wherever anglers do congregate to compare notes as to size of fish grassed, number of baskets, and to draw out programmes for future seasons. Concerning our river, a writer in the London Field says it is—
One of the finest trout streams in the world. Teems with fine, firm, pink fleshed, willing and game fish of all sizes. Not an early river, on account of the unmelted snow on the mountains from which the river takes its source. About November Ist the fish begin to take the artificial minnow or fly readily. The upper reaches lishable from Motupiko give sport towards the end of the season, when the fish travel up to spawn. The chief fishing vantage point is the town of Motueka, but accommodation with farmers can be obtained right along the river’s course, and "particularly good sport may be had with the fly where the Baton joins it.
