A Vienna paper says that,.the specifications of a new kind of boat ; have been lodged at the Patent- Office there by a Croatian engineer named Cvetkovitch. The vessel, called an “serohydrostatic boat,’’ is to be a cross between a chip and a fly:Kg.•••machine, and is to attain a s - speed, to .theinventor,, which would enable it to circumnavigate the world in -48 The principle seems to be ' that when set in motion the boat raises itself on the surface of .the. sea ,and slides on a film of water.or air. . ;PROPOSE!! FARMERS’ CO:QMSS.VNVE DISTRIBUTING CO. - . ]N.Z. Dairyman. :v ’ ' Our readers have no doubt read with considerable interest the reports that have jfrpm time to time appeared in ..this journal concerning the sure'"and -steady progress of the above project. The present proposal originated with the Otaki Branch of the N.Z.F.U., in February last, and since that time the principles involved in the scheme have been endorsed by almost every branch of the Union throughout the Wellington and Nelson Province!;. : We learn with pleasure from the Organising Secretary, Mr A. Leigh Hunt, that the list of provisional directors, which in eludes the names of our leading farmers throughout Wellington, Nelson, and now. almost complete. Tt is hoped to have the first meeting of directors in October, when the neceswill be made ior’the immediate flotation of the Company. ‘ Jfe have before us the proposals of the Company, and as we are prevented by law from publishing the -prospectus at this stage we must content ourselves ; with setting forth a few of the objects for which the company is being formed. The primary and most urgent proposal of the cprppahy is the establishment of a co-operative distributing depot iri the city of Wellington fbr the purpose of cultivating af direct trade with the consuqaers of farm produce, particularly fruit, poultry products,, and vegetables. Of this worthy project we feel sure we need say but iit tie, as we presume both consumer and producer alike will at once hail with joy a proposal calculated to be of such great matual benefit. Then and then only may we liiipe far the passing of the existing wretched system which qn-the one hand restricts production, because of the low prices received by fa.nners, while on the other it limits the consumption on account of the high prices that the consumer requires to pay. Working hand in hand with the depot the promoters hope to have at some future time such kindred industries as pulping, preserving, canning, wine, cider and vinegar works, as well as evaporators for drying fruits. It is not intended to rush into everv branch of trade specified above at the commencement, but-as the directors .bv successful operations of the depot find they have surplus energy at their disposal, the' operations of the company will be extended'in the directions indicated. 1
We have no hesitation in saying that in our opinion such a complete system as that outlined above would be a great boon to the community and ten ! to minimize' to the lowest degree the present wicked waste which is constantly occurring, and which does nobody any good’. At the present time the export of fruit from this colony is practically iiil, while, through our defective systeni of distributing we yearly .import large quantities of fruits that could be prbfitably produced within the colony. Thie Obrnnany nopes to remedy this importation by instructing its shareholders as to the best varieties of fruit to' cultivate to enable the company by storing and preserving to supply its customers the whole year through. It also aims at .promoting a successful export trade by stimulating production and finding ready and profitable markets, outside the dolony. The company sets forth its intention of protecting the customers from the large amount of rubbish that now finds its way to the consumers’ door. This will be achieved by-teaching the producers the benefits accruing from proper grading, packing, and for-warding their produce. As a .whole; the scheme is calculated to supply all the machinery necessary to create an ideal system of distribution, and we have no doubt that every producer
of fax-m products will rally round the prompters and loyally support them in carrying Tt out. U
