The Rev W. Grigg, Methodist minister at Reef ton has been appointed by the Governor to the position of Chairman of the Westland Conciliation Hoard. Mr R. S. Hawkins, tae Sti pendary Magistrate, was proposed for the position as well as Mr Grigg. The voting being even, and the Chairman of the meeting having no easting vote it was resolved to send the following notice to the Governor : —At a meeting appointed to be Greymouth for the purpose of electing a Chairman of the Roaid of Conciliation of the Westland Industrial District, the members of the Board then and there present failed to elect a chairman.” Who would have ventured to predict say a year ago, that Mr Barclay would lmve any possible chanco of being re-elected as a member for the City, let alone being selected by the workers as one of their ticket? asks “Junius,” the Dunedin correspondent of the Tairei Advocate. The steamer Jane Douglas, which has been “ locked up” atOkarito, West Coast, since the 4th of August owing to the channel closing, has been enabled to get to sea. A new channel had to be cut. A fowl thief, convicted at Foxton of robbing a hen roost, has been sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment. Several Dannevirke farmers are complaining that their lambs are being killed by stoats. One farmer has lest as many as a hundred. A band of 300 masked and mounted cowboys and ranchers, fully armed (according to the Daily Express) some weeks ago raided a herd of 100,000 sheep in the southern part of the State of Wyoming, because of a feud between themselves and the shepherds. Afterdriving off the shepherds, they killed 3000 of the sheep and drove 65,000 others into inaccessible parts of the mountains, where they left them to starve. A “pauper lunatic” in Lancashire, who died recently, was found to have hidden away in tins, chimneys, bags and all sorts of out of the way receptacles —468 sovereigns. She was an old woman of 90.
A Manaia (Taranaki) correspondent has heard casually of a certain young man, who, on his honeymoon, whilst in Wanganui purchased a farm of 500 acres near "KLai Iwi, and a few days later, sold again at an advance of «£1 per acre. Lucky honeymoon !
The latest South African market report says that Potatoes are getting cheaper, though poor lots are still fetching 17s 6 1 a bag, and extra fine samples as h-gh as 355. Eggs range from 4s to 5s a dozen. Fowls vary in price from 3s to 9s, according to size and condition. A fowl fit for the table cannot be had under 7s. Ducks average 10s, turkeys 12s 6d to 16s, according to sex. The butchers are giving from <£3o to <£32 10s for cattle
of very mediocre quality. Flour American and Australian, is 17s 6d to 18s 6d per 1001 b. INFLUENZA is always more or less prevalent at this season ot the year.
