WHERE THE SHROPSHIRE SHEEP SCORES.
The Shropshire sheep is making a 'great'.mithe for itself abroad. In some experiments recently canied out with the object « f testing the suitability of ariouk' crosses for the Australian fec’Zen mutton trade, it was found that the best results were obtained with Shiopshire and South Down rams. These breeds were tried as -crosses with native ewes -along with Leicester's, Bordet Leicester's, Lincolns, Dorset Horns, and Cheviot rams, and all the experts by whom the resulting crosses were examined, voted the Shropshire and South Down lambs as the best suited for the purpose. It is this great adaptability for mating with other breeds of sheep in the production of profitable crosses that has stood so well to the Shropshire wherever it has been tried whether in these countries or abroad. Its admirers claim for it that its adaptability for crossing with other breeds entitles it to the same position among sheep as the Shorthorn occupies among cattle, and the results which are being obtained with it go to show that there is considerable foundation for the claims made for it in this connection.
