At a sitting of the Old Age Pensions Court, held yesterday, Mr Wilson Heaps, S.M., dealt with several applications for renewals. The Brooklyn Tennis Club will the season on the 24th instant. In the evening a dance will be held i i the evening. The last issue of the Golden Bay' News says . —The funeial of the late Trooper G. Fowler held last Thursday' was one of the largest ever seen in Takaka. There was a splendid muster of returoed troupers and volunteers, and civilians from all parts of the 'district turned out ito do honour to the memory of one, who. died from the effects of a disease contracted while serving his country. In addition to the messages of sympathy mentioned last week, as received by his parents, one was sqnt from the Staff of the Nelson Volunteers.
The following new volunteer regulations are gazetted : —Officers commanding corps will be held, under the officer commanding district, responsible for the training of their respective units in musketry. Musketry instruction and range practices in the annual course must be at all times carried out under the superintendence of an officer of the corps, assisted as far as nracticable by' a member of the permanent or district staff. To enable an officer or volunteer to qualify for capitation he must fire the course of target practices approved for the year- by the Commandant of the Forces. Officers and non-commissioned officers of the rank of sergeant and. upwards, are exempt from firing in the collective practices, but should command or supervise units during the execution of such practices. The Frim ley orchard. Hastings, Ha wke’s Bay T , already' the largest in the colony', is being added to. Twenty-six acres have just been planted with peach trees.
It is said that owing to the necessity for much map work in connection with the alteration of electoral boundaries, the general election on this occasion will be later than usual. The Parliamentary' correspondent of the Dunedin Star says : —“To adopt the role of a prophet, I venture to suggest Friday', October 3, as the date of prorogation. What leads me to come to that conclusion is that if Parliament is in session on October 6th the Speakership f the Council will expire by’ effluxion < f time, and a successor to Sir H. J. Miller would have to be appointed. To have a contested election and possibly a new Speaker elected in the closing da vs of Parliament would be undesirable.
