Regulations for Medical Ex~ ami nation of Returned Members of Contingents . .(«•) Bona fide invalids are those who have been invalided from South Africa, and who can produce documentary evidence to this effect, or who have" been pronounced, fit subjects for an Invaliding Board by the medical officer in charge, of the returning >hip, or a certificate from a medical officer in South Africa. f , (p) A member of'Vmy Contingent, - >■ within six months of' his landing in New Zealand can go to any medical man to be examined and. pay for such If th'e doctor certifies he is in such' a. state as the iexult ■ of- Active Service that a Medical Board is advisable, the Officer Commanding the District will send the mdn before a:Medical Board. (d) Should Medical Boards, Government' Medical Officers, or Volunteer Medical Staff Officers, as the case may . be, consider that a returned trooper is entitled, in the first case to more than six months leave, in the second case to more than: two months’ leave, they should state so on the Medical Board in the proper* place, and recommend them for re-examination on the expiration of their leave. Pen ney, of the local post and telegraph staff has been granted a fortnight’s leave of al sence. The appointment of Mr J. S. Wratt as a rue miner of the Nelson .Land Board will meet with the anpiohntion of residents in thi> 1 >cality. Mr Wratfc has a thorough knowledge cf the requirements- of this district and is also acquainted with the lands dealt with by the Board in other parts of the provincial district,. Mr P. vE. Irving, representative of the Christchurch Meat Company Limited (Picton works) is at present on a business visit to Motueka. He has supplied us with a handsomely got up pamphlet containing views of the company’s large works at Picton, a capital likeness of the managing director of the Company, Mr Gilbert Anderson, and a photograph of the guests present at the luncheon tendered to them by the company on the 9th of July. There is also a full report of the speeches made “over the walnuts and wine.” That given by Mr Ander son traced the wonderful. career of the Company he represents and the development and importance of the frozen meat industry to the Colony. Mr A. Manoy has been busily engaged during the past week opening out a large shipment of spring and summer goods imported direct from the manufacturers. Inspection of the st. >ek 's freely invited and in want of seasonable requirements should make an early visit to Mr Manny’s emporium. We remind the public of the meeting to be held at Riwaka tomorrow evening, at the Oddfellows’ hall, convened for the purpose of discussing the advisability-of building a large hall, on a site to be agreed upon, for entertainments, balls, etc. The project is most favorably’ enter tained by all and there should be no difficulty in bringing the proposal to a successful issue. Applications are invited by Mr J. S. Wratt, Chairman of the Motueka Wharf Board for the position of Secretary of that body. Applications must be sent, in not later than the 4th of October. The present .Board is setting a I rout its duties in a methodical and business like manner an<l the members evidently realise the responsibilities of their chfrrge. The plain and lancv dress ball to be held on Wednesday evening, under the

auspices of the Institute Committee, promises to be a most successful affair. Active preparations have been going on in the direction of making up unique and attractive costumes, which will lend additional charms and novelty to the ball. A sumptuous repast will be provided for the occasion. tender for the erection of the new premises for the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand has been secured by Mr Andrew Miller. The building is to be handed over within eighteen weeks from the date the c >nditions are signed. This institution is one of the most successful established in tv.e district and is deserving of the loyal support of all classes of the community
