There is every likelihoocTof the proposed direct steam service between Motueka and Wellington being shelved, as the residents of Takaka and Collingwood are bringing influence to bear in order that their ports shall be included in the subsidised service. It is also rnmoured that the Government intend calling for fresh tenders in the direction indicated. Such an arrangement will not meet with the wishes of shippers i n this locality and they should see that the original undertaking, agreed to by the Postmaster General is carried out. At a meeting of the Motueka Mounted Rifles, held on Saturday night it was decided to hold the annual ball on the *29th of this month. A representative committee was appointed, who intend making the function the most attractive and successful one hitherto held in the district. The subject for discussion- at the next meeting of the Motueka Literary and Debating Society will be “Single Tax."’ We understand the question
